Victim killed in mass shooting at Indiana County Chevy Chase Community Center identified as 22-year-old Jamar Motae Porterfield-Herriot

His manner of death was classified as a homicide, but his cause of death is still pending autopsy results.

The Indiana County coroner has officially named the individual who tragically lost his life in the mass shooting at a party held at the Indiana County community center.

The victim is identified as Jamar Motae Porterfield Herriot, a 22-year-old resident of Homestead.

According to the coroner’s report, he sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the event at the Chevy Chase Community Center and succumbed to his injuries on site.

While the manner of his passing has been categorized as a homicide, the specific cause of death awaits confirmation pending the results of the autopsy.

Eight additional individuals sustained injuries in the shooting, among them an 18-year-old man from Chicago who is currently in critical condition.

State police are actively conducting an investigation into the incident and, at present, no suspects are in custody.

The incident occurred at the Chevy Chase Community Center situated along 5th Avenue in White Township.

Promptly after receiving the call at approximately 12:35 a.m. on October 8, Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) in conjunction with local law enforcement and EMS swiftly responded.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s campus is slightly over a mile from the scene of the incident, and notably, it was the university’s homecoming weekend.

As per an announcement from IUP, two of the nine individuals affected were students at the university. Waynesburg University also confirmed on Sunday that three of the victims were students.

Notably, Waynesburg University is located just over 100 miles from IUP. Upon arrival, Troopers discovered that nine individuals had sustained gunshot wounds, and unfortunately, one person was declared deceased at the scene.

State police have shared the following details about the victims.

  • 22-year-old man from Pennslyvania
  • 19-year-old female from Pennsylvania
  • 23-year-old female from Pennsylvania
  • 19-year-old female from Pennsylvania

The victims were taken to various medical facilities including Indiana Regional Medical Center, UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, UPMC Mercy Hospital, and Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center.

State police reported that several of the victims received treatment and have since been discharged.
