13-year-old Edgar Salinas Gonzalez killed in Red Springs area shooting

The Public Schools of Robeson County issued a statement requesting prayers for the family of a 13-year-old who lost his life in a shooting.

The district has identified the young victim as Edgar Salinas Gonzalez, a 7th-grade student at St. Pauls Middle School.

“We send our deepest condolences to Edgar’s family during this difficult time,” the statement on the district’s Facebook page reads. “…We also ask the community to keep Edgar’s teachers, classmates and school in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate this time of loss.”

“Deputies from Robeson County are currently conducting an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred in the Red Springs area on Tuesday night.

Responding to a call just after 9 p.m., deputies arrived at the 100 block of Lapaz Drive, where they found a teenager who had succumbed to a gunshot wound.

Sheriff Burnis Wilkins confirmed that the victim was a student at St. Pauls Middle School.

The middle school has issued a statement regarding the student’s passing:

We are saddened by the news that one of our students passed away last night. Our prayers are with all of his family and friends. We will have a crisis team on campus today to offer support to any student or staff member who may need it. Thank you and continue to pray for our staff and students.

The investigation remains active.
