Durham’s Northern High School was placed on lockdown following a stabbing incident on the premises, as reported by the Durham Police Department.

The incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m.

Authorities indicated that a confrontation ensued at the school, during which one individual allegedly utilized what is believed to have been a knife to attack at least one other person.

Durham Sheriff Clarence Birkhead affirmed that at least one individual sustained injuries and required hospitalization for treatment.

Several individuals were apprehended and subjected to questioning. Birkhead stated that the investigation is currently underway.

He did not specify the number of individuals involved in the altercation or whether they were all students.

Northern High School returned to its regular activities around 1 p.m.

“Kids are safe here at Northern,” Birkhead said. “We’re going to continue to work together and continue to be prepared, because these things will happen unfortunately. Schools are not immune to violence or any incident of this nature. So that is why it is important that we ensure our public and our parents and our students, that we are going to do everything that we can to make sure that they are safe.”

Northern High School is a new school that opened on Tuesday, Sept. 5, the first day of school for students.
