At approximately 5:20pm this evening, the Winona Police Department took an assault complaint in the 250 block of Junction Street.

The suspect, identified as Stig Ure, age 25, assaulted an employee at the business with a sharp object and then fled the scene.

The victim received non-life threatening injuries.

Due to the serious nature of the assault, the Winona Police Department requested residents in the area shelter in place while officers searched for the suspect.

At approximately 9:30pm, a citizen who received the emergency alerts, contacted law enforcement regarding a suspicious male crawling in the weeds along the 1100 block of Highway 61.

Ure was subsequently located and taken into custody.

Emergency alerts are sent out by the Winona County Sheriff’s Office at the request of law enforcement agencies.

During this incident, Winona PD requested a “shelter in place” but due to multiple alert platforms being utilized, several messages went out and caused some confusion.

In addition, a different alert platform not utilized by law enforcement mistakenly sent a message regarding an “active shooter.”

We apologize for the confusion caused by the emergency alert systems in this case.

The Winona Police Department and Winona County Sheriff’s Office are working together to identify areas for improvement.

Ultimately, our goal is to provide the best public safety for all residents of Winona.

Agencies that assisted the Winona Police Department in bringing this incident to a successful conclusion included the Winona County Sheriff’s Office, Winona County Emergency Management, Goodview Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Winona Area Ambulance, and the Winona Fire Department.
